I Dig Vegas - Jeffrey Lynn Reid Review by staff writer Butch Halpin from Carolina Sounds

I first met Jeff “a few” years ago when he was with The Fantastic Shakers, and have had the pleasure of seeing him perform as a solo artist. He has released several solo CD’s since leaving The Shakers and each one has been unique in its musical offerings. This one is no different, as it showcases not only Jeff’s songwriting, performing and producing talents, but his varied musical influences and preferences.
I really dig the first track, “Blast From The Past”. This one has been making some noise on Beach Music radio. A song that just may find its way to some dance floors is “Mushball”. Some shaggers may want the tempo a tat faster. A long time fan of The Bee Gees, Jeff delivers a tribute to the late Maurice Gibb in “Number Three”. “My Simple Life” is a funktified tune showcasing Jeff’s guitar expertise. “Connie” is a slow dancing tribute to one of the most popular female celebrities of the 1960’s, Connie Francis. This one is reminiscent of the 60’s sounds mixed with the sound of today.
“Don’t Take Me For Granted” is next, followed by the mellow “The Meadows”. The high-octane title track, “I Dig Vegas” is saturated with some awesome guitar and horn playing and adorned with Jeff’s vocals telling of how much he digs the city of lights. In the lyrically brilliant “A World Without Colors”, he sings that the world would be black and white and dark as night if his love were to ever leave. The final track is “Bring Back Michael Landon” which is as noted on the CD “a tribute to... this one’s pretty obvious!” and is complete with a reprise of “Blast From The Past” mixed in the song’s ending.
So there you have it my music loving friends. Is this a “Beach Music CD?” Nope. But what it is however, is a selection of ten songs in various styles, by one of the most talented writers and performers I have ever known. --- Butch Halpin |

JEFFREY LYNN REID |
|
The Center Of Attention (JLR Productions OLR8) |
|
Jeffrey Lynn Reid is ambitious. In fact, his new album, The Center Of Attention, is a blue- print for progressive posturing. If anything, Reid's vision may be a bit too broad; with this outing, his musical palette scopes out every- one from Chicago to Boston to English innovators such as The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and The Moody Blues. Fortunately though, Reid's work never sounds cluttered.
Judging from the scrapbook snapshots and the autobiographical commentary plastered throughout the CD jacket, Reid draws on
several decades of influences and experience.
His notes detail a wealth of references, but the music itself displays evidence of ample talent given the fact that he wrote, produced and played every instrument on the album. |
